Drink Up Buttercup - "Of Gods and Gentlemen"

These dudes are derivatively Beatles-esque and I must deduct points for that, but then, who's not derivatively Beatles-esque on some level, you know...

I like this song (give it a couple listens; I didn't like it at first and you won't either)
and their headline on their MySpace page is "kill it,"
and that's enough to get an endorsement from me. I'm easy.
PLUS they have that kind of dirty, indie-music-boy weirdness that's
so homogenous & forced,
it
makes me hate 'em just a little.
This keeps our relationship complex and interesting, however. See you in the frozen section at TJ's, guys!

Natty Ice, Casio, playing cards, candle holder, plaster arm, tiny bongo drum.
Probably some American Spirits in there too.
Yeah yeah, groundbreaking photo wackiness, gentlemen.

"I will attack you with this broom, on your 10-speed, in the KITCHEN. I am just that wacky."

mp3.

There's something we need to talk about

Why don't the people who love and care about me drag me here so I can bro down and nerd out??
(and by this, I mean sip my Red Stripe & rap alongside Lord Finesse in my head & people-watch while dudes don't talk to me because they think I don't speak English*)

I guess I didn't know the ledge.

Everybody just lets me do what I wanna do (stay in, listen to records, lounge around) because I am so stubborn and charming but sometimes I need some guidance, please realize.

Next week, you better run a tighter ship and make sure I get my white-shirt-and-heels-and-jeans-clad-self (always, I'm always wearing this) to this tour de force.
Going out is the new staying in is the new going out.

* Too many times to count, I've been told this. I'm not imagining things.

"Where are you from?"
"Where's your mom from?"
"Where's you dad from?"
"Are you part Persian?"
"Brazil, right?"
"Greek & Irish?"
"De onde você é?"

swirls on his wall like a comet's tail

Why don't you come over & eat ice cream & watch "Tim and Eric" on Adult Swim with me.

"I'm teaching your SON about the UNIVERSE."

Mos Def has a dude crush on Zev Love X

OMG, I love "Rapp Snitch Knishes" too! We have so much common ground, Mos, I don't know why you and I ever broke up.
It's '04 again when you listen below!
(Doom produced it himself; and yeah, sorry for the nerding out)

"to all rappers: shut up, and while you shuttin up put a shirt on, at least a button-up"

More football!

You people should know by now that I am an NFL dork, an NCAA football dork, and a Fantasy Football dork.
My super cute fleur-de-lis bathing suit is, in fact, in honor of the Saints (my NFC team).

Michael Turner got me allkindsa points last year on my fantasy team, whereas Kellen Winslow was not killing things due to a stomach virus and an extended case of being a massive crybaby.

NFL Owners Will Vote to Lengthen Season, Goodell Says

"DANA POINT, Calif. — National Football League owners could vote in May on plans to lengthen the regular season to 17 or 18 games. The longer regular season, however, is unlikely to begin any earlier than 2011, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday at the N.F.L.’s annual meeting. Adding at least one regular-season game while reducing the preseason schedule is a critical component of what Goodell called “increasing value” — the league’s attempt to find new revenue while remaining attractive to fans in the challenging economic climate. There is almost no chance that the regular season will remain at 16 games."

54 percent not getting any younger over here

Millions of Americans can just forget about the fucking bus ever showing up when it's fucking supposed to.

Everything Taking Too Long
March 24, 2009

"WASHINGTON—An overwhelming sense of restlessness and impatience engulfed the U.S. this week when citizens determined that everything—the morning commute, phone conversations, getting a table at Chili's, making coffee, commercial breaks, everything—was taking entirely too long.

"This is ridiculous," said Boston resident Joe Sosnoff, waiting for a subway train running behind schedule. "I don't have time for this. I seriously do not have time for this."

"You've got to be kidding me," San Francisco market researcher Tim Martin told reporters while waiting for ESPN.com to load on his desktop computer. "Come on."

People across the country were forced to put up with this maddeningly slow bullshit all week.

A CBS News/New York Times poll revealed Tuesday that Americans are split into three separate camps when it comes to the growing national frustration: Those who think everything is taking too long; those who think everything is taking too goddamn long; and a third fringe group that believes everything is taking fucking forever.

Further analysis revealed that 54 percent of respondents are not getting any younger over here. Nearly 10 percent don't understand what the big holdup is. And 23 percent are not only ready, but have been ready for the past half hour, so let's go already. While citizens said that a few things, such as lunch, dinner, and sleep, could afford to go on for much longer, everything else reportedly needs to get moving pronto as people have places to be."

You wanna battle for cash and see who Sun Tzu?

Redman & Method Man feat. UGK - "City Lights"

Fresh from giving me a haircut, Reggie and Clifford slow it down and dumb it down (in a good way, of course) and make a run through Texas in an attempt to please my ears.
Well done, gentlemen.
After all these years, they still know how to capture my heart! Swoon.

"
Today a GOOD DAY; I know, don't jinx it.
"

The Grouch feat. Scarub & Bicasso - "Hot Air Balloons"

(Real quick--new Death Cab, "A Diamond and a Tether," so beautiful)

OMG kids, my ears are telling me it's the summer of '96!
Fuck the Dumb & Don't Talk to Me, cuz I'm listening to this on repeat.

As the authority on sorta-indie Cali rap music (thankyou), my assessment is:

the beat is lovely
the chorus is eh
02:11 - 02:20 is ALL THINGS to me at the present time!

Uriel Jones...

Drummers don't ever seem to get recognition unless

they're self-destructive and are always involved in hijinks (I'm looking at you, Keith Moon & John Bonham)

or have 1 arm (Rick Allen)

or move along to other instruments (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme)

or are an anomaly cuz they're a girl (Sheila E.).

I have listened to this song OH SO MANY TIMES in life and its shut-it-down-ness has not subsided in the slightest.
Thank you, wondrous drummer Mr. Jones.

Also played on:
"Tracks of My Tears"

"What Becomes of the Brokenhearted"
"Ain't That Peculiar"
"I Heard it Through the Grapevine"
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough"

"The Dirty Garage"

"Sometimes I wish I could fit an entire heart inside of my heart
but my heart's not big enough
is why I need your heart."

Random Tribute: Pirkle Jones

"There's no such thing as objectivity."

A Black Panther demonstration on July 30, 1968, at the Alameda County Courthouse in Oakland during Huey P. Newton’s trial.

"Pirkle Jones, a California photographer admired for his stirring images of migrant workers, endangered landscapes and social movements, including a controversial series on the Black Panthers at the height of their activism in the late 1960s, died March 15 in San Rafael. He was 95.

His best-known work includes a collaboration with (Dorothea) Lange called "The Death of a Valley 1956," which portrayed the Berryessa Valley in Napa County during the year before completion of the Monticello Dam that flooded the valley; "Walnut Grove 1961," a series Jones shot with his wife, Ruth-Marion Baruch, which documents a dying Sacramento River town; and "Black Panthers 1968," also in collaboration with Baruch, which caused a furor for its sympathetic view of the black power movement.

According to Wride, Jones and his mentor disagreed about the extent to which political concerns entered into Jones' art, but Jones saw the simple act of taking a photograph as a political act. "There's no such thing as objectivity," he once explained in an interview.

Jones, who with his wife belonged to the Peace and Freedom Party, made no secret of the fact that his purpose in photographing the Black Panthers was, as he told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2002, "to show them the way we saw them -- as human beings."

During the four months in 1968 that he and Baruch focused their lenses on the radical group, they produced a number of emblematic shots from the campaign to free Huey P. Newton, the Panther leader who was facing voluntary manslaughter charges for the murder of an Oakland police officer.

The Panther photographic essay caused an uproar; even Adams advised Jones to drop the project. The controversy almost caused San Francisco's De Young Museum, which was mounting them in a show, to cancel the exhibition, but after union leaders and art critics intervened, the museum went ahead with its plans. The show drew 100,000 visitors.

"I had professional clients who said, 'What in the world are you doing photographing Panthers?' I'd just sort of shrug my shoulders. I did not make a big speech about it. I did the talking through the photographs.""

Huey P. Newton and attorney, Charles R. Garry, at the Alameda County Courthouse Jail, Oakland, CA 26 Sept 1968.

SIDE NOTE: Mr. Newton, kids, is swagger in the form of a human male. SWAG-GERRRRR.

Peter Bjorn & John - "Nothing to Worry About" (Live@Fader Fort, SXSW)

GODDAMMIT if I don't love some Swedish guitars n beats n catchy hooks!
I wish I had been there. Sigh. Sigh sigh.

Del - "Get It Right Now"

New Del! I'm sure everyone is posting this right now, but have I mentioned it's NEW DEL?
It's New Del!

The beat is so blaring and weird and loud; everyone says it sounds like they looped a car alarm.
Luckily, blaring and weird and loud usually means I love it with passion.
The beat is good.

I need a magical little thing called the instrumental of this in order to make my life complete.
There's nobody more predictable than me. Sigh.

To quote ajfleury3 on the YouTubes, "beat is heavy son."

L.A.U.S.D. - "Curly Tops and Nautica Jackets"

My boss likes me to work when I'm at work,
even though I'd rather be listening to mixtapes put out by local talent.
What I'm saying is, I haven't actually heard this yet since I'm sitting in the office...

'Sgood, though. I can tell.

- Download link

EDIT: I'm not psyched. Wah-wahh. "Starter Jackets" makes me happy just cuz of Nas's voice (Jansport J, may I have the instrumental, pretty please? Also, you are so young and so killing it already! Nicely done!).

However:

that Pac Div one is not so cute to me, and what's worse is that I get the feeling it's being directed at us lady types (topic of cheatin', female singer on the hook, slowness on the beat). That's condescending and please don't do that.
Cheating is a hard enough topic in real life; I don't need to hear yet another hot 16 about it.

But the EP is out today, and it's got "Mayor" on it and that's a lot more appealing to my lady ears.

OMG, that Les Miz shirt. Gimme.

"What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coca Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca Cola, too. A coke is a coke and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it."

Animal Collective remix Yeah Yeah Yeahs

!

!

!!!

(I haven't actually heard this, mind you, but I'm already experiencing aural sexytime).

Time 4 Sum Aksion

Oh dear, another one of my ex-boyfriends is feeling the effects of the economy (Method Man's Navigator repo'd due to $52k in unpaid taxes. Whoopsy!). However, all I really care about is THIS:

"Despite possible financial issues, Method Man is still finding time to give back to the community. In April, the rapper and longtime collaborator Redman will be sponsoring a day of free haircuts for kids at a Staten Island barbershop.

"We have wonderfully loyal customers and felt this was just another way of rewarding them during these unusually hard economic times," Tariq, a barber at the shop, said in a statement.

On the music side of things, Meth and Red released a new song last week called "A Yo," (which I did not care for) and are reportedly working on a new collaboration album -- their first since 1999's Blackout!"

I find Redman to be quite comical and a damn good MC. Now I just need to get to that barber shop in Shaolin and convince them I'm a 9-to-12-year-old.

Pouty-face cuz USC AND Siena lost and that messed up my whole stupid bracket.

"A million poor since 2004, and they got illions and killions to waste on a war "

Andre Shepherd walked off base and deserted the US Army; he's now applying for asylum in Germany.

"Although my family is supporting me, they wish I'd taken a different step, because the potential for me not returning [home] causes a lot of emotional stress. I have to apologise to my parents for that."

"It was the middle of the night in April 2007 when Mr Shepherd packed a few things and walked out of the gates of his American army base in Katterbach onto German soil.

"I could no longer support this illegal war in Iraq with a clear conscience," explained the 31-year-old, who had been due to return to Iraq where he had already spent six months serving as an Apache helicopter mechanic.

"It has been proved that Saddam Hussein was not a direct threat to the United States and the war is simply being waged in order for the US to gain access to raw materials in the Middle East," he said.

After almost two years spent living underground in Germany, he has now applied for asylum.

His case rests on a European Union law guaranteeing refugee status to soldiers who might be prosecuted for desertion if military service involves violating international law.

According to Mr Shepherd, that is exactly what the war in Iraq does.

If sent back to the US, Mr Shepherd would be court-martialled and most likely sent to prison for a period of between six months and a couple of years.

But German politicians are wary of supporting his case.

"A soldier deserting the army because his conscience no longer allows him to carry out his military duties is clearly not a reason for him to be granted political asylum here," says Christian Democrat (CDU) politician and deputy chair of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Wolfgang Bosbach.

Mr Shepherd is the first Iraq veteran to apply for refugee status in Europe, and there are fears that his case could encourage some of the other 60,000 American soldiers based in Germany to desert and do the same.

Others argue that granting him asylum would damage US-German relations by effectively defining the war in Iraq as illegal." !!! How odd.

Bored white girls in hipster Gap gear = wack, but the song itself makes me feel like sexytimes, lounging around and being a bored white girl in my thigh-high knit socks from hipster Gap. Oh wait, I do that anyway!

When it's properly used, it's almost invincible

See, I have this thing where I'm really curious about random things & get excited when I learn new stuff...
it tends to be boy stuff because I like boy stuff. But 'member, it's like I always say: tomboyish tendencies in a girly package, ya dig. Upon further review, this one's not all that random since I was drenched in Wu from the time I was like 15.

SAMURAI VS. NINJA!

The Quick Trick: Samurai wore elaborate armor and never stabbed anybody in the back; ninjas wore no armor and loved stabbing people in the back.

The Explanation:
The word samurai is somewhat analogous to European knight: They were considered nobility, worked for noble higher-ups, and were renowned for their great bravery and code of honor. So much so that all the little kids wanted to grow up to be samurai! (Or so we imagine.) Ninja, on the other hand, were well-disguised mercenary assassins governed by no code save secrecy.

The samurai arose in the 10th century, working as a kind of police force for the Japanese city of Kyoto. By the 12th century, the samurai life as we know it today was established; samurai were well-educated men who could read, write, and kill thanks to their extensive martial arts training. They also adhered to the Bushido, an orally transmitted ethical code that forbade samurai from striking enemies from behind or pillaging unnecessarily. It also required them to commit ritual suicide, known as Seppuku, if they dishonored themselves or the samurai tradition.

At the peak of the tradition, between 7 and 10 percent of the Japanese population—most of Japan’s army—were considered samurai. And although samurai are usually depicted with swords, they did adapt to modern warfare with firearms in the late 16th century. In fact, samurai helped Japan to win wars against Korea, China, and even Spain, staying on the scene until the end of the 19th century.

If the samurai relied upon a code of honor, the ninja relied upon their stealth and ferocity. Technically, a ninja is anyone who practices the Japanese martial art ninjutsu (meaning that you, too, can become a ninja just by visiting your local neighborhood dojo!). Because ninjutsu teaches everything from stick fighting and knife throwing to disguising yourself and predicting the weather, figures like the 16th-century Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu have employed ninja tactics to escape enemies early in their political careers. But almost from the beginning, the myth of the ninja proved even more compelling than the reality of them. Long before their portrayal in movies, ninjas were romanticized by everyday Japanese citizens, who shared stories of the ninjas flying, or making themselves invisible. The real ninjas, meanwhile, were mostly schlepping about, spying and assassinating, just trying to pay the bills.

Karma, Police

Three Oakland police officers killed, one critically wounded after traffic stop, shootout.

BART = Blasting At Random Targets.

I do not care for law enforcement and stories like these reaffirm that. Thank you and good day.

"House Party" as an action movie!

I luuuuv mah marriage

DATELINE: Tampa. (This is not from The Onion, promise)

Man wearing an "I Heart My Marriage" t-shirt arrested for choking wife.

"The arrest report says that the couple were arguing over drugs, and during the fight at their home, (the man) screamed in his wife's face, threw things, grabbed her neck and strangled her, and knocked her to the ground."

Not funny, but kinda funny. C'mon.

People said his brain was infected by devils

"Wu Tang Clan's GZA joined Black Lips on stage last night at Emo's at the Austin South By Southwest festival
for an impromptu, un-rehearsed performance.
"

- Link

This was either kinda stupid and pointless, just a reason for the band to show the world they do have at least 1 Black friend...OR it was superdope and I should be sad I wasn't there.

OH, AAAND

"GZA joined the band for renditions of the rap troupe’s song 'Liquid Swords',
rhyming on the spot as the band jammed."

Ummm sorry to music-nerd-out but that's not a Wu song and I shouldn't have to correct a music news website with that info.
If you are a music site you probably should have your Gary Grice game tighter than this, NME.

These dudes make out with each other on stage and throw things and light fires and generally try to shock,
and that's lame and tired but of course it's to be expected when you're on Vice Records.
Also, Cole Alexander, I see you--
and Adrock did Adrock better in '86 than you're doing Adrock in '09.
That being said, let's make out at Sway on Morrissey night cuz you're pretty foxy.

This song is derivative, so 1978 LES New York, pills & Warhol & Max's Kansas City.
I love it, though, because I am kinda dumb and easy to please and a sucker when it comes to music.

OH and did I mention

more things that please me:

- Nirvana re-releases on vinyl

- The Check Your Head re-release on vinyl, plus that whole Hollywood Bowl thing

- Local Natives, who annoy me by saying they're from Silverlake on their site (dude, just say LA, please) but I feel affection for them since they're just like every other dude I see at TJ's on Hyperion.

"OMG, there's never ANY parking here." "Yeah man I know, but the one at 3rd & La Brea is even worse."

Their song "Airplanes" makes me so happy & sad at the same time. I'm kinda tomboyish, full of sarcasm and love of hiphop production and I make fun of those I like most, but good lord do I love a pretty melody and some heartfelt words. I read back on my posts sometimes, and I think, Goodness, I sound super cranky and not nice. But I don't know why my writing voice is like that, 'cuz I'm shy and a softie in real life, just ask anyone. : )

"The desk where you sit inside a frame
made of
made of
of wood."

Airplanes - Local Natives

The chorus, with the drums...kills me every time. Teary-eyed.

"I want you back, back, back
....you back."

Sigh.

All I've got is a photograph/I wanna touch you

Black Milk - "Dreams"

When you are a girly girl such as myself you like pretty tracks with melodic piano breaks over some thick drums. Life's not worth living unless...

wait for it

I get the INSTRUMENTAL of this.

Raw like cocaine straight from Bolivia

Oh have you not heard about my NBA affiliation?

I saw a dude wearing this last week at the park next to the office & got kinda excited.
"LEN BIAS!" I wanted to say, & walk over to see if he'd tell me where he got it, but I was too shy.
I had to find it, though...
Luckily my hypebeast game is extra tight & I did, yay.

I find that dudes in LA wear sports gear for fashion, not cuz they like the actual sport or any specific team-- except you, dude at La Cita with that nice "Mbenga!" tee last night. Sorry if you saw me staring, sir;
I shoulda said something, it was quite a nice-looking design.
It was a good game last night, no? Me + Adam Morrison's moustache have a love affair happening.
