EPIC adorableness

Hi all, I'm still waiting for one of you people to impregnate me just so I can watch Yo Gabba Gabba! with my impressionable child and then read this to him/her before he/she drifts off to sleep! Things are not working out between me and Acey and I've decided I'm no longer saving myself for Gucci or Chuck Inglish, so let's go.

I must dispute the use of the word "indie" here, but the book's cuteness more than makes up for it! Lookie:

Things that please me, 03/20/09

1. Wale & Lady Gaga on the same track--the song itself does not please me, but I enjoy the fact that I can now get a 2-for-1 on hate and that takes a lot less time & energy! Hate consolidated, I guess. Thanks, Cool & Dre!

2.

3. PB Wolf, 14" taller + no haircut for a few months = Pau Gasol

4. The Bible's new cover

5. "It is amazing

6. The Knux, "Fire" (video). C'mon, that hook! I am a superhater but even I'm sayin just relax & give in.

Clyde Stubblefield explains it all to Marley Marl

Nineteen-eighty-NINE another number, another summer
sound of the funky drummer!

The ghost note is what it's called...that shuffle-y thing we've been enjoying all these years
(thanks for asking, Marl)

It's so sweet at the end when this man, everybody's favorite rapper's favorite produer, fans out--

"I feel like this is what life's all about." Awww.

Atheist bus ads on display in cities across Canada

No hate if you are of a religious persuasion, I just was raised by a couple of heathens so I am always atheistically inclined.
"If triangles had a god, he would have 3 sides." - Montesquieu

"Signs bearing the message, "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life," will appear for four weeks. "It's time that we show our point of view," said Cliff Erasmus, executive director of the Calgary Centre for Inquiry.

The campaign started in European and American cities in recent months, and made its way to this country when the Freethought Association of Canada, a national atheist organization, raised $43,000 in donations across Canada to buy similar ads."

Newspaper box graveyard

The Boston Globe has a greatly depressing feature called "Scenes from the Recession,"
including this storage yard of newspaper racks and boxes that have been put out to pasture.
Wah-waaahhh.

I'm a newspaper dork so this is sad, but the pic itself is kind of stunning and beautiful.

SXSW docs online for free!

Confessions of a Superhero is a feature length documentary that chronicles the lives of three mortal men and one mortal woman who make their living working as superhero characters on Hollywood Boulevard. The Hulk sold his Super Nintendo for a bus ticket to LA; Wonder Woman was a mid-western homecoming queen; Batman struggles with his anger, while Superman’s psyche is consumed by the Man of Steel. This deeply personal view into their daily routines reveals their hardships and triumphs as they pursue and achieve their own kind of fame.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a feature film documentary that follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day. Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has always been a difficult (if not impossible) proposition but after Saddam’s regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in which real freedom seemed possible. That hope was quickly dashed as their country fell into a bloody insurgency. From 2003-2006, Iraq disintegrated around them while Acrassicauda struggled to stay together and stay alive, always refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.

The Least of These explores one of the most controversial aspects of American immigration policy: family detention. As part of the Bush administration policy to end what they termed the “catch and release’” of undocumented immigrants, the U.S. government opened the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in May 2006 as a prototype family detention facility. The facility is a former medium-security prison in central Texas operated by CCA, the largest private prison operator in the country. The facility houses immigrant children and their parents from all over the world who are awaiting asylum hearings or deportation proceedings.

Crawford: In 1999, then Governor George W. Bush bought a ranch in the one-stoplight town of Crawford, Texas, calling it “home” just in time to set his sights on the White House. Having invented Bush’s “folksy image,” the campaign’s victory thrusts Crawford onto the world stage and an insular community of barely 700 explodes overnight. While the high school band plays the inauguration and the Baptist pastor declares a miracle, Crawfordites sell souvenirs hand over fist, finding themselves nearly trampled under the heels of the international press corps, patriotic tourists and boomtown opportunists. Then, four and a half years into Bush’s tenure, Cindy Sheehan and her peace movement arrive at the doorstep of the “Western White House.” Crawford takes center stage.

Stoupe ft. M.O.P. - "Transition of Power"

Stop what you're doin cuz I am, in reality, about to ruin the image & the style that you're used to. I need the instrumental of this in order to continue living! Please expedite this; thx.

The Mash Out Posse is a little too much for my girly ears sometimes but I find this quite pleasing. Per Wikipedia, Stoupe (Jedi Mind Tricks) "at times samples upwards of 50 sounds for tracks" (!), my goodness.

Listen, you need to be put up on your Pete Seeger game and I am here to do the putting. I am a super duper hiphop dork to the

Ethan Lader, you're my new boyfriend

OMG, the CHORUS, you guys. I judge the knocking-ness of a song by the level of embarrassment a family member would feel upon hearing me sing along with it. "I heart dumb sex raps, Aunt Jean, there's really no gettin around it. Sorry."

I have happened upon so much ear candy these days it is unmanageable, we know this--
this one's all visual, however.

The video is crayzayyy and good and insane and great, plus I approve of the casting of skinny girls acting ridiculous (my agent musta been out of town, cuz I would've been ideal),

Waveforms as bracelets!

Do not be fooled--the "Sound Advice Project" is those hideous anti-drug people--but the concept is so super FRESH, you can't deny.

"Designed as a jumping-off point for parents to discuss drug use with their children, the "Sound Advice Project" converts voice recordings into bracelets with rings representing the waveform of a parent's recorded admonishment. They're $18. It's unknown if there is any sort of vetting process for each recording, but I can testify that "Drugs can be fun and informative. And used responsibly can be part of any healthy person's cognitive life" will just fit into the Flash applet's six-second recording space."

I would like "bitch I might be" in waveform so I can wear it on my dainty wrist, please.

Obscenity vs. Profanity vs. Vulgarity

Subjecting you guys to my nerdy whims is fun beyond words. I can't believe you people don't sit around thinking about this stuff, too! It's magic.

"Who’s mad at you for saying what you said? Obscenity gets you in trouble with the law. Profanity gets you in trouble with religious folks and The Powers That Be. Vulgarity just gets you in trouble with your mother.

Obscenity (from the Latin obscenus, meaning “foul, repulsive, detestable”) generally covers sexual or scatological references to the body or bodily functions (i.e. f*&k and s#$t). The term is also used in a legal context to describe expressions (whether words, images or actions) that offend the sexual morality of a given time and place and are not protected by the First Amendment.

In this legal context, though, we’re still grappling with what counts as obscene and what does not. Former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once famously said that he couldn’t define what kind of material was obscene, but he knew it when he saw it. We’ve came little further with the Miller Test, which comes from the 1973 ruling of the Supreme Court of Miller v. California. If an expression meets these three criteria, then it’s obscene:

1. The average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest.

2. The work depicts/describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct or excretory functions specifically defined by applicable state law.

3. The work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.

If the expression fails to meet any one of those criteria, then you’re off the hook. “Average person,” “community standards,” “patently offensive” and “serious value” are all fairly subjective terms, though. Even with the Miller Test, there’s no national standard for what classifies as obscene, and distinctions between protected expression and unprotected obscene expression vary among federal court districts.

If you’re being profane, you don’t need to worry about the Supreme Court (it has no legal definition), but if you believe in an immortal soul, you might be in trouble. Profane (from the Latin profanes, meaning “outside the temple”) originally referred to things not belonging to the church. (oohh, bonus nerdage!) Later it meant blasphemy, sacrilege or taking the Lord’s name in vain (we just call that blasphemy now).

Today, profanity is an expression that is specifically offensive to members of a religious group. The definition also extends to expressions that are scatological, derogatory, racist, sexist, or sexual. What is and isn’t profane largely depends on the context and the company you keep.

Finally, vulgarity (from the Latin vulgis, meaning “the common people,”), which used to refer to text written in a vernacular instead of Latin, has two definitions today, depending on who you ask. For some, vulgarity is generally coarse or crude language. For others, it is more specifically the act of substituting a coarse word in a context where a more refined expression would be expected."

I was just frontin

Some streetwear boutique in Mexico had some event for some music festival this week, and my diamond-dipped ex-boyfriend was there. I'm pretty sure he's like 5'6", his falsetto is annoying, and it's true, he can't skate, but it's going on like 10+ years that he and his almighty SPY CHORD have held a special, throbbing place in my heart.
Goddammit.
I hate myself for this post. Let us never speak of it again.

Things I do not care for, 03/17/09

1. "Kanye West has filmed a guest voiceover spot for the new cartoon series The Cleveland Show. West plays an aspiring rapper called MC Kenny West in the program, which is a spin-off of the hit TV show Family Guy."

2. Male musician types who duck my requests to write a piece about them for Wax Poetics and instead pursue naked-time activities with me. I'm looking in your direction, certain rapper guy and producer guy and other producer guy.

3. I'm not at SXSW and I do not care for that.

UNDRCRWN is putting forth a collaborative collection with my ex-boyfriend Mos Def,
and I approve of this.

HOWEVER

the situation depicted above frightens and confuses me.

Once again, Ash is so stoked on being streetwear-tastic and standing in the presence of Master of Ceremonies greatness that he is blind to his own wackness. UGH.

Please make it stop, please.

Both hands clusty

I enjoy a witty and/or attractive t-shirt, esp if can boast of the following features:
1. It's a pun.

2. The Godfather.
3. Gino.

Boys' stuff is always so much fresher than what they make for the ladies.
(Well, 'cept for this.)

Get 'em Ray!

Camp Lo ft Charles Herron - "89 of Crime"

Camp Lo mixtape, yay!
No idea who this Charles Herron human is. And unfortunately, the battle for Worst Producer Name in North America is heating up with our newest contestant, Apple Juice Kid. He has the misfortune of looking like some Ed Hardy doofus behind me in line at Whole Foods (the hair, the glasses, it all makes me so cranky):

I wouldn't lead you astray, my dears! Please trust that it is supremely lovely and go ahead & CLICK.
"Put your tape decks on record!" - Blizzard Man

All I can say is WA DA DEY, WA DA DA DEY.
At the 00:39 mark, I get excited. You guys should see it; it's pretty sexy, I'm not gonna lie.

Whiskey in the jar

I would be remiss if I did not take a moment on this day to acknowledge the great nation of Ireland.

Van--tortured/brilliant. Substance abuse problem. Per my dad, fell off the stage in Berkeley in 1972 before his show started due to intoxication. Super G, DGAF. "Astral Weeks" is next-next-NEXT-levels aurally pleasing to me, an album so romantic that it's sacred in my world and I don't want to say any more about that and expose my heart on the Internets.

The Pogues in general, and Shane MacGowan specifically--tortured/brilliant. Substance abuse PROB-LEMMM. If you listen to "Fairytale of New York" on Christmas Day it makes baby Jesus happy (also, the video with a young Matt Dillon is lovely). I have added 18 points to their overall score due to the Elvis Costello factor (produced Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash. Sorry for music-nerd-ing out yet again. Sigh.).
Phil Lynott...no words can express. Tortured/brilliant to the nth + fond of chemicals; no longer with us due to both of those qualities. Everybody talks about Prince's influences...Prince & James Brown, Prince & Sly Stone--C'MON. Listen, I know we've all bro'd down at least once to "The Boys Are Back in Town" at the bar, but hear me when I say that "Jailbreak" is the true jammy.

Also on this list: potatoes, Jameson, myself.

I am up on things, so many, many things.

I have been to the other side, and I have returned with this urgent message to share with all of you:

Diplo & Lil Jon are working together and that is a situation I can endorse.

I'm already labeling this "Ear Candy" and I ain't even heard it yet.

"I liked LL and Shan with my Roxanne rhyme/It might sound wack but it was dope at the time"

Gettin ready for the break, your heart starts to race

You was hyped, cuz I could see it on your face

Mix Tapes - The Nonce

Early '90s reminiscing time yet again! Freshman year; I'm pretty sure Salih had a hand in exposing me to this. I don't know if this was just an LA song in '94 or if it was played all over... but I think cuz there's a lot of talk about the Good Life doc lately, I've been thinking about all those dudes. I mean, Acey is never not on my mind, but The Nonce, I believe, were part of that crew as well. I tried to post the video but was unsuccessful; I just wanted to remind you of the greatness that was Yusef Afloat (dude in the beanie; no longer with us). Picture it, a 15-year-old Logan, listening to this after AP English class. OK now stop it, pervs.

$100 later

Real quick,

The humans reading this will probably never know too much about me, as I choose not to disclose too much on here. This is because: a) I'm rather boring; b) when I read about people's activities on their web logs, I'm bored ('cept for Rez). Mag wheels, Tecate, your friend's living room, out to dinner with your sister, your new fitted. BO. RING. I wouldn't do that to you guys; c) I am not an exhibitionist and this is my most charming quality (next to my fat ass).

However, my interests are pretty evident. At the Beat Swap Meet on Sunday, I met several members of my dear readership and that was lovely. See, I told you: a) I'm a real person; b) I'm nice, skinnier in real life, and a little socially awkward! A charming combination!
.

LA freaking legend Icey Ice (!) extracted cash from my hand at the Stacks booth. And an extra special thanks goes to the grizzled old white man who sold me about 20 records for $1 apiece. Life is wonderful.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "Young Adult Friction"

I just discovered is that this song is used in an Urban Outfitters ad and that is not killing it. I heard the song and loved it before those jackasses ever touched it with their filthy paws, promise. And please, can we all talk about the fact that the song is about gettin it in the library and that's the kind of thing that gets my good-girl motor going? Young Adult Friction, see, it's a pun!

"Between the stacks in the library
not like anyone stopped to see
we came, they went, our bodies spent
among the dust and the microfiche."

Young Adult Friction - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

PS--bass player Alex, please accept my crush request even though you like boys.
