When the routine bites hard/And ambitions are low. Camu Tao. All I've got is a photograaaaaph.

1.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" has been deemed the ultimate Manchester anthem. This has upset some of your mates over in that part of the world, who are bickering now about The Stone Roses and The Smiths being better choices. Because evidently this is what British people think about when there's not a football game on.

2. Camu Tao memorial t-shirt by Jeremy Fish, in the category of "Shirt That You Should Put On And Wear To The Bar If You Want Logan To Stalk You At The Bar."

All proceeds go to his family.

3.
It's Les Paul's birthday! I could've posted Jerry Garcia or Jimmy Page or Hendrix or Clapton or Marley--all Gibson Les Paul players--but I had to go with Steve Clarke from Def Leppard. You know how we do it in apt. 302.

Melody,
chord progression,
'80s-ness,
Joe Elliott wailing out of lust and misery,
the line "Look what you've done to this rock n' roll clown,"
and that HOOK that brings meaning to my life:

Mutt Lange, you're gonna get yourself a "Random Tribute" post one of these days.

Animal Collective - "Daily Routine" (PHASEONE remix); or, "I am making love to the cities of Baltimore and St. Louis, respectively, cuz of this jam."

"We went to The Lou and commissioned this just for Logan since she did not find that Dam-Funk one to be the hotness."

mp3.

Some dude named PHASEONE just surpassed Nelly in my Favorite Humans from St. Louis power rankings.

I do not know how I've lived this long without having had that "yeeuh" between 00:01:00 and 00:01:01 in my life. Sweet Jesus.
I need this in my headphones and in my general area for the months of June through August, thanks so very much.
Hi there, summer in the city! You were missed.

"Shake that body, party that bawwwwdy/Don't fuck with Ghost, you'll feel sorry"

It's like I'm always saying, my Lakeshow squad is so amazing that even an MC from the isle of Staten, 3000 miles away from here, clearly recognizes its greatness and mentions one of its marquee players in a verse. A Lakers win makes me feel so healthy, so mighty healthy.

Pretty soloette velvet nice DNA scroll genetics
Too hot to handle, one thought--scramblin the mandolin

Hundred game Wilt Chamberlain, smack em, say when...

(by the way, how much burning-hot passion do we have for this jam?* It rules. It just rules so hard. It's the year 2000 again, press play and you'll see that it's true)

Look at Wilt!
Both hands clusty!

*

(I know it was Philly that he scored 100 for. No need to alert me via email. Luckily, I don't care about that fact and it takes nothing away from the cohesion of this post that ties together Starky and the Lakers.)

Bar Refaeli and the Mash Out Posse

[Where my 15-year-old suburban Caucasoids at? Tyler, Cody, Justin, listen up--new HOV!
(I am contractually obligated to post this because I have a blog and I don't want my credentials stripped)

Jay-Z, "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)." The download link is on every fourth website you've been perusing in the last 72 hours, so you should have no trouble finding it. Sean Carter, I know you and Yeez have been conspiring to come up with the Least Original Song Topic. You did it, Jay! Congrats! Although I must say--I do like: the fact that you mention blondes (hollerrr) with fat asses (semi-hollerrr, my ass isn't as fat as I'd like), that Crips/Bloods line, and the fact No I.D. will soon be giving me the instro which will occupy a key spot in my summer soundtrack for jaunts around El Lay.]

Moving on:

WHR game super duper proper! I have loved Bar for a few years now, as she is lovely and sort of plain and sort of exotic-looking at the same time not unlike your favorite slender nerdy girl with a web log and anatomical proportions passed down from momdukes.

I was an English major, and being a woman is one of my most favorite things about being alive, so I can endorse the scrawling of a short story on some lovely female skin. The fact that the words are from that awful Stephen King person is something I am choosing to look past at the moment.

Is it wrong that I would volunteer my body for something like this without needing more than a half-second to think about it?
My mother would not approve but I'm grown and she's not the boss of me.
"I'ma do what I wanna, quiet as kept."

Also, of course the words would have to be from the realm of hip-hop. Of course. Duh.
"Ante Up," duh.
"I'm nine hundred and ninety-nine thou short of a mil" carefully inked on my tummy, yes, that'd work out just fine.

Viktor Frankl.

"What is to give light must endure burning."

Let's Organize. So we can plant trees.

Basically I am Monch-obsessed and basically this is why all the boys sweat me.* Also, because I am Monch-obsessed this is how I know that he wants us to plant trees. Monch cares about the earth and so now I am very, very concerned about the earth. Tree-planting is an important cause, gang. He's like my personal Johnny Appleseed, but Queens-bred and really good at rhyme-writing.

World Environment Day was June 5, and
the apocalyptic one teamed up with something called mokugift.com "in order to spread the message of environmental concerns through tree-planting." They plan to plant 7 billion trees by the end of the year in Asia, Central America, and Africa because, sure, why not.

I don't know where Monch's alleged "Tree Island" is but ummm I'm pretty sure I'd like to visit if it means he'll be stopping by to do maintenance and check on some saplings.

PS, because it is Monday and because I love Organized and because a reminder of some '90s greatness never hurt anybody:

* Negative.

Like the Afrocentric Asian...half supporter/half protector

Diamonds are blindin, I never make the same mistakes
Movin with a change of pace, lighter load, see now the etymology is straight
.

I got plain old nouns and verbs in my arsenal, plus place names, and now my proper noun etymology game is getting increasingly tight.
Today's word: NASIR!

Nasir
: Arabic (nofuckingway), "the protector; one who helps render victorious, provide support, supporter,"

from
nasara, "to render victorious, to assist, to grant victory."

Electric word, life/it means forever and that's a mighty long time

We all love our sexualitaay and we all love music.

Ergo, we need to do something to appropriately honor the fact that today is the date of birth of a tiny, tiny man filled with sex and basslines and the holy spirit. 06/07/58.
This is, in fact, a CELEBRATION, bitches.

"My copyright protection game is super tight...so very tight that mp3s are impossible to stream from apt. 302 and into the hearts and minds of HeightFiveSeven's readers."
Not cute.

That darlin darlinnnn in "Another Lonely Christmas."
Basically the whole Batman soundtrack.
"Dorothy Parker" from start to finish. That Joni Mitchell reference surprised and pleased me the first time I heard it. Next levels.
"Pop Life," "Starfish and Coffee," "Hot Thing," obviously.
"Alphabet Street" obviously too, but then later the freshness/irreverent-ness of Arrested Development using that "Tennessee" part!
The complete omission of a bassline in "When Doves Cry."
And the first, bootleg, original original version of "Crystal Ball" with the all for fun/fun for all part that was etched onto a bracelet and given to me and that I wore on my dainty wrist for most of high school.

GODDAMMIT* PRINCE. I know it's inappropriate to feel this way about a person I've never met outside of my headphones at home and the Kenwood in the car, but you're the BAWSS--the wee, tiny MPLS bawss. I'm sure I'm one of about ninety thousand tall and skinny long-haired girlie types with pale skin to tell you so, but I love you dearly and thank you for teaching me about sexytimes. You'd love my paisley-patterned bikini, I just know it.

Plus...
my home, it's so exciting...

I got a brass waterbed.

* Sorry--you're still a Jehovah's Witness, right?

Episode 604: the one where I realize I'm from the wrong era for the 8257th time

If you don't click on this and sigh with wistful longing for 1970 then I simply cannot ever ever in a million years ever allow you to see me naked.
(you're not missing much, don't worry.*)

* Just kidding, you totally are.

#38. This version is fucking incredible and summer-y and appropriate for fornicating with.
The F word = I really mean it.

Legendary humans in the hip-hop world doing things that I do not care for, 06/06/09

Panic on the streets of London/panic on the streets of K-town!
I wonnder to mysellllf...

We do not care for the following here in apt. 302.
I looked up "terrible" in the dictionary and I believe the news items below fit the criteria.

1. WhattheHALE is THIS.

"Rapper Snoop Dogg has produced a new Johnny Cash remix album, which will be released later this month. The album, 'Johnny Cash Remixed', features new interpretations of some of the late singer's biggest by acts including Alabama 3 and Buck 65. Among the notable tracks is an 'I Walk The Line' remix featuring Snoop Dogg. The rapper acted as executive producer on the project alongside Cash's brother John Carter Cash and Mathew Knowles (???)."

"Please stop, Calvin Broadus."

Pete Rock breaks my heart into a bunch of tiny pieces.
There's that show "Intervention" on A&E, you know? Well, they need one for producers who have started to stray down the wrong path.
(hosted by me, of course)

2.
And THIS, a little thing I like to call "Rae Makes Me Cry Because I Am Literally Bored To Tears By His New Boring New Track."

"Olympus," produced by Tru Master, on OB4CL2 in August.

Fake Chinese strings. Boring/dumb.

3. And THIS. Mos Def + Slick Rick + Madlib, WHAT. Yaaaayyy.
Except, oh wait, it's not really them. It's imposters. Make um say disappointment.

It would've been great if those 3 could've all joined forces, but the resulting boring song with a hook that goes

"What it is/you know, they know

what it is/we know, yall know

what it is

ecstatic, there it is."

was obviously made by scientists in a cruel experiment to see if I could, in fact, be disappointed to death.

Listen to this instead, please.

English class, 06/06/09. But also Record Producing class.

Kurt gives Extra P and me the exact same advice because we're so much alike when we practice our respective crafts.

"Find a subject you care about and which you feel others should care about. It is this genuine caring, and not your games with language, which will be the most compelling and seductive element in your style."

Kurt Vonnegut.

Oh.

This fallen angel could stitch a wing with a shoestring.

Planet Rap Caucasia, it's an epic day in the history of our people. Everyone's favorite comely depressed mic wielder (who I'm pretty sure I could cheer up with my warm sweet love but then I'd lose interest in him because he'd be cheerful) celebrates another completion of the earth's revolution around the sun.

Happy birthday, Ian Bavitz.

Mighty Mos speaks on the Lakers even though this song is 11 years old

**SPOILER ALERT: My squad wins!**

It's amazing sometimes, these lengths my brain goes to in order to link a lovely '90s song lyric with goings-on in the world. I can connect the Lakeshow with some Brooklyn MC-ery in 1 move. I know, you guys are like, Go 'head with your master's degree, gurrrl.

Scenarios like this is tear jerkers
for the modern MC, i.e. the blue collar worker
'Cuz this thing called rhymin' no different from coal minin'
We both on assignment to unearth the diamond...

OH DANTE, my people alerted me to the news of the listening party for The Ecstatic at Union a while back but my lack of understanding that you would in fact be present in the building for said listening party led me to think Why would I go stand in a room of hypebeast-y dudes listening to that Mos record when I could listen to that Mos record in the comfort of apt. 302 while drinking tea in my onesie or bikini? This just in, I'm a dork.

Anyway, Mos, I would also like to inform you that the whole "wives of MCs" part with the way you present industry heartbreak from the lady point of view, plus the song's overall theme and subject matter that few have tackled (loving/hating the rigors/pleasures of touring), has resulted in your verse getting honorary status in my canon of Hot Sixteens From The Nineties and nobody can take that away from you. Also, did you see my post about Brooklyn? OMG, it means Broken Land in Dutch!

The Drama Button. Language nerdery. Wu pun. Damon Riddick.

1. The Drama Button! Dun-dun-dunnnnnn.

2. "What happens when a language dies?"

"A group of linguists working on language revitalization have identified "hotspots" where local tongues are at risk of disappearing. These are places with rich linguistic diversity, but high risk of language extinction due to relatively few remaining speakers and a lack of recordings or texts that would help with language preservation."

3. Yay for rap music,
and big yay for a new/old Wu album being called
Chamber Music (pun!),
plus an extra proper yaaaay for drums of this caliber
and a beat that I love with all of my heart (!!).

But the removal of cuss words makes me cranky.
Ghostface, AZ, Inspectah Deck - "Harbor Masters." 2 STEPPPP.

mp3.

4. I did not care for that Animal Collective re-rub but I still heart Dam-Funk because he's a philosopher who understands human nature.

"People just want funky bass lines."
("People" = Logan)

Plus he wants to do a horror movie score. Yes please.
And in the "Thing I Should Have Already Known" category, he was a session keys player for MC Eiht and Westside Connection!

"During the mid-G-funk era, I got pulled into sessions to play keys. The greatest thing about the West Coast G-funk era was that it was all recorded by real musicians. So that's how it was different from New York hip-hop. If they liked a groove on a record, they replayed it. So, amongst the guns, weed, and testosterone, there were some legit musicians who got work from that scene."
-Wax Poetics
(Danny Holloway article)

Mr. Weiss, it's EIHT, MC EIHT. "Eight" is incorrect, silly.

The Prez endorses Lakeshowww, continues to amaze & be perfect in nearly every way.

"Lakers in six," says President Dreamboat.

"Worth noting: the basketball-obsessed Obama correctly predicted that the University of North Carolina men's basketball team would win the NCAA championship. He called the Super Bowl, too. His track record is flawless."

Thanks, Tate the Great!

Episode 599: the one where I post some girly music to make up for just posting "The What" lyrics

Just pretty things.

1. Jazmine Sullivan (really) feat. & produced by Waajeed (!!), "Jumpoff."

The sun comes up in the morning, I like puns, the Lakers are terrific, Red Stripe is good, and married dudes love me. After spending approx. 12.7 seconds on this here web log that chronicles all aspects of my nerdery I'm not sure how a man could take a look at me and think Yessss, she would like to have intercourse with me repeatedly on Tuesdays and Thursdays when the wife and kids are at soccer practice, but it's more comical than upsetting, really.

Luckily, beautiful horn stabs and drums of unparalleled syncopation will always provide a message of hope and happiness in one's time of confusion. Big and and girly and shiny and 1966-ish, this makes me miss Rich Harrison a little less. Waajeed produced this for Jazmine’s debut album but it didn't make the final cut because record label people in charge of decision-making often make mistakes.
OH Detroit, I love you and I'm nothing without you.

I never ever ever would've posted this in the days prior to about 2004. I was a music snob back then and a realllll pain in the ass, believe me. I'm so much more fun now. (just ask a married dude!). Also, I forgot to mention that you might have to have lady parts in order to enjoy this.

mp3.

Completely unrelated except that they are gorgeous too:

2. "Revenge" feat. Wayne Coyne(!), from that little Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse industry imbroglio.

mp3.

3. AA Bondy, "There's a Reason."

mp3.

4. AZ, "Good For Nothin."

Oooh, somebody's got daddy issues!
I need the instro sometime last week, please and thank you.

mp3.

5. The Temper Trap, "Sweet Disposition," this week's running-through-the-fields-in-a-sundress banger.

I don't need to remind you of the levels of intensely pleasurable music love heaped upon me by "My Girls" back in that episode from January, since you guys had to sit me down and have me breathe into a paper bag due to my enthusiasm level.

"Like trees to branches/cliffs to avalanches"

I never met a '90s lyric scrawled on a wall that I didn't like, we know this.

Biggie liked 'em brainless, so I don't think we coulda hung out. But still.

Fun design-y pun. Al B Sure!. Chico Sonido.

1. Marley lyric (not the Clapton version, ew) + typography + a pun.

via

2. It's the birthday of New Jack Swing-er and Human Who Has Disappeared Al B. Sure!, a trainee at the Aaron Neville Academy of Large Men with Falsetto Voices. I got all excited when I read that Teddy Riley did some production on this album; however, my excitement was quelled by the fact that Teddy Riley did not produce this particular song even though it sounds exactly like a Teddy Riley production.

Music snobbery gets us nowhere, you guys. You love this pop music jam and you'll be less miserable when you admit it. Press play and it's like we're all listening to Old School Sunday on Hot 92 Jams.

3. If I did not post something that involved bikinis and rock music, 2 items from the My Favorite Things In Life list, I would have done a great disservice to myself and to you.

chico sonido bikinis y rock.

chico sonido mas discotheque teaser .

We're a winner.

06/03/42. Happy birthday, Curtis Mayfield.

Words fail me. Other than thank you.

"Freddie's Dead" is a predictable one from me, but I was limited by the offerings on the Internets and I died a little inside when I couldn't find "Future Shock" to post on here. But you know, it's not like this one below is not one of the greatest selections of aural perfection in all of musicdom.

I mean, holy Christ, truly, if it were possible to actually in reality fornicate with a piece of music I would select the "Freddie's Dead" 10-second bridge-within-a-bridge transition (02:16) to give my body to, in multiple ways, repeatedly, overandover and again.

PS, sigh:

Day n' Nite...these 2 dumb dudes, they keep stressin my mind, mind

These "Dudes Who Will Not Be Seeing Logan Naked" Conventions seem like they're happening more and more frequently. Hating Ash is so tired and unoriginal and boring, and yet I simply cannot stop.

PacDiv, knock it off. You're better than that.
I approve of this, however.

Russ & I get back together, briefly, in the name of marriage equality

After unceremoniously showing me the door when he discovered my identity as an annoying hip-hop nerd outweighed my role as a bikini-clad, industry groupie snowflake, Russell tries to get back into my good graces by criticizing my formerly progressive state's Prop. 8 debacle.

If President Johnson had to take a vote, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would not have passed. If Congress took a vote in 1920, women may still not have the right to vote today. And if President Lincoln went to the polls, blacks would definitely have endured many more years of slavery. We trusted our government to make the right decision and protect the minority, (and) we, as a nation, failed."

Russ is still optimistic, though.

In my heart, I know that marriage equality for every human being isn't a question of if, but only a matter of when. I ask those who feel that giving freedom to others somehow binds you, to please take a good look at what you are standing behind. It is only through opening your hearts will you be able to see that by promoting freedom for all, you are unchaining yourself. I guess I'm an optimist. I have faith in people and our government ultimately to do the right thing. And to my brothers and sisters in California, I'm there with you every step of the way until that day comes..."

OH RUSS, stop making me swoon! I'm glad we reconciled just in time for the dinner party with Rick Rubin, Uncle L and Oran "Juice" Jones. Some dudes get Birthday Sex from their ladies; other dudes get Being Leftist and Politically Aware Sex.

"These 5 fingers, they go straight to the soul of man."

1955. Night of the Hunter, Robert Mitchum creepy murderous preacher goodness.

"Nineteen-eighty-NINE. The number/another summer..."

Let me tell you the story of "Right Hand, Left Hand." It's a tale of good and evil. Hate: It was with this hand that Cane iced his brother. Love: These five fingers, they go straight to the soul of man. The right hand: the hand of love. The story of life is this: Static. One hand is always fighting the other hand; and the left hand is kicking much ass. I mean, it looks like the right hand, Love, is finished. But, hold on, stop the presses, the right hand is coming back. Yeah, he got the left hand on the ropes, now, that's right. Ooh, it's the devastating right and Hate is hurt, he's down. Left-Hand Hate K.O.ed by Love.

No Fucking Way: Scary Evil Old White Man edition

Make me wanna holler/throw up both my hands.

"Cheney Disavows 9/11-Iraq Link."

"Oopsy! Nevermind about that thing I said, and
about those people having to die as a result. Still friends?"

"On Monday [June 1, two thousand and NINE], Dick Cheney admitted at long last that there was no link between the Sept. 11 attacks and Iraq, contrary to what the Bush administration had led the nation to believe in 2003 in order to justify waging a war on a country rich in history, culture...and oil. Tens of thousands of Iraqi and American casualties later, we thank you, Dick.

Bloomberg: Cheney disavowed intelligence he once cited to suggest that then-Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein collaborated with al-Qaeda to stage the Sept. 11 attacks, (and) said reporting by the Central Intelligence Agency of collaboration between Iraq and al-Qaeda on Sept. 11 'turned out not to be true.'"

Just another local kid from the street gettin paid for his vocal

If you see me today, come up to me and let's share a special moment.
It's an important day in my life, as it is an epic and historical day in hiphop-ery:
B-Real's birthday!

He got the clearance/to run the interference,
into your satellite, shinin a battle light.

Also, he's responsible for the best use of puto in an early-'90s hiphop song.

Nineteen ninety one...it was a time when men were men and MCs wore baggy pants like they're s'posed to goddammit. That first Cypress album came out and that's when Muggs and I began our brief but intense love affair full of drum breaks and sirens, weird filter-y effects and Curtis Mayfield and Bar-Kays loops. Muggs sounded like Shocklee if Shocklee moved to LA, learned broken Spanish, and started kickin it with a dude with such a super nasal-y (i.e., dope) delivery that he just had to put him on a record.

(The only 2 Cubans in the greater LA area somehow found each other and, quite mysteriously, both happened to possess rappy skills and have a fondness for football jerseys and bucket hats and beanies. What are the odds, I ask you.)

PS:

Don't be alarmed. It's just the sound of me throbbing with delight all over because obviously Dilla can do no wrong and Bun B can basically do no wrong so I'm a happy supernerd.

Amoeba, open your lovin arms to me this evening when I get off work. I'm coming for you, Jay Stay Paid.

Yancey + Dumile + Coles - "Sniper Elite" + "Murda Goons"

Hi 2005! I miss you!

These 2 were recorded in '05 and go together deliciously, prob due to the fact that they go together deliciously on Donuts. The Ghost one resurfaces 2 years later on Hidden Darts. Sorry if you know this already. Music nerdery is the air that I breathe.

Dear transition at 01:54, thank you for improving my life.
Warm regards, Logan.

And oh look, below we have yet another piece of music finery that makes me exclaim
Oh-five, you were so good to me!

The bassline, of course, but also the "Strawberry Letter 23"-esque sound and piano and horns right before the break, oh my goodness, stop it. (I couldn't find the instro in Internet form--just on a round black piece of vinyl on my floor)

Domino, muthafucka

Sorry to be the annoying "Can you play _____?" girl at your BBQ, but be forewarned that I'm gonna request this one too (in addition to a little Beatnuts). I like to mix my east coast with my west coast for maximum effect.

I think you might need to be from a 75-mile radius around the greater Los Angeles area in order to fully comprehend why this song is so great. If this does not include you, I am sorry about that and lucky for you there are plenty of other posts you can scroll to on here.

Flow. Cadence. Delivery. Kam, come back and save the situation!

weekend warriors but weekday cowards...

"You got the wrong girl, Sam."

Cleaning apt. 302 over the weekend & organizing the vinyl mess & Casino comes on the TV, it makes a girl realize, heavens to mergatroid, I'm basically the Ginger of K-town

except not really and with less coke and fewer hustler tendencies and except that my thing is records rather than shiny things or furs.

Oh lookie, it's that album they had a whole nerdtastic seminar about and that I missed because my people did not alert me to the situation.

Oh. This too. Just cuz it doesn't really go in another post.
